Aviva Community Fund Logo

The Aviva Community Fund has been running for more than four years, and has helped thousands of small charities and good causes build stronger communities all across the UK.  The fund focuses on helping people through life’s challenges and opportunities by supporting applications for forward-thinking projects that enable causes to adapt and innovate their vital services.  This year HCUK are delighted that our project has been selected.  Any funds this generates will help us set up an online forum and develop a virtual community for those affected by Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer.

Our Project

Social distancing as a result of Covid-19 meant that we had to suspend our usual support group meetings for people affected by Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal cancer and has highlighted the need for new ways of providing support.  Prior to Covid-19 we offered peer support in specific geographical areas but we want to establish an online forum that means we can support those impacted regardless of their location.  This will allow us to extend and update our service, supporting those who may not feel confident to attend meetings, who live in areas where there is no physical group or who work or have a busy family life and need a support network that they can dip into at times that suit them.

Living with cancer or with a condition which may lead to cancer, can be extremely testing, affecting mental and physical health.  It also impacts those supporting patients.  Evidence shows that peer support projects such as this can help those affected to feel connected, informed and understood, improving their resilience and empowering them to face the many challenges that these conditions raise and improving quality of life.

16,000 Aviva employees have a total of £250,000 of Fund money which they distribute across a number of projects that strike a chord with them.  There are many to choose from and some stiff competition with other good causes.  The public and our supporters can also donate.  If you feel that you or a loved one would benefit from this type of support, please consider whether you can spare a small amount by donating through our Aviva Community Fund project page and help us to continue improving the service we provide for our community.  Every donation makes a difference.  Thank you.
