Latest News Capsule Sponge Test Technology as Part of a Heartburn Health Check The capsule sponge test we have been most familiar with and you will have heard us reference a lot in the last few years is the Cytosponge™. A simple pill on a thread test that is swallowed by the patient, the capsule coating dissolves and releases a sponge, the sponge is retrieved by the nurse after around 7mins collecting a wonderful cell sample on the way. The test is then sent to pathology to determine whether the sample result is negative, or if positive might require further investigation and discussion with the patient. There is a new generation capsule sponge test now available called EndoSign®. It works in the same way with a pill on a thread test that collects a cell sample but it has an applicator for improved efficiency and patient experience. The nurse places the applicator in the patients mouth to release the test at the back of the tongue, avoiding the nurses gloved hand placing the pill and thread in the patients mouth. There is a great video below to show you how the device works. We just wanted to help avoid confusion for people who might see information about EndoSign®. HCUK are a huge advocate of capsule sponge test technology to improve earlier diagnosis of Barrett’s or oesophageal cancer so that appropriate monitoring or treatment can take place. EndoSign® Cytosponge™ We will do our best to keep you updated as we learn more about these tests and their availability. Manage Cookie Preferences
